A Wild & Mild Winter

It’s been too quiet around here

no snow until today

a winter so mild, it makes me wonder

what is in store ahead.

The peace found in nature

unparalleled with a wild, wild world

where uncertainty has set in

on the political scene.

So much unrest

yet these pine trees

outside my window

seem unscathed, at least for now.

But if we stop caring about the environment

what will all the money in the world do

we can’t buy clean water, blue skies, and oxygen.

While the rich get richer

children and the elderly go hungry

and vanity is more valued than the arts.

Will we forget about health and science, too

all in the name of greed.

  1. You have described our reality so well. I love that the peace of the trees is juxtaposed against the political climate. All the answers to life lie in the forest, if humans could only quiet themselves and learn how to live with nature.

  2. Your poem captures my feelings as well – the uncertainty, the unrest, the turmoil, the lack of care for people and environment. Despite the ‘mild winter’ it seems we really do not know what is ahead.

  3. Pointed writing, beautifully read. These are indeed uncertain times, but I think we must go on doing whatever we can – and giving thanks for what beauty remains.
